The next time you’re at the beach, wear your safest shoes.
That’s the advice of one brand that’s been the subject of an intense public health campaign for decades.
“You should never walk on sand,” the ad for a pair of “tactical shoes” from Nike, says.
“And that’s a good rule of thumb.”
Nike says it’s the only footwear brand that doesn’t have an official safety label, but the campaign has also drawn comparisons to other brands like Adidas.
“We are very much on the right track and we feel the campaign is an important step in addressing the issue of footwear that is not safe,” a company spokesperson told NBC News.
“This is a global issue and we are working with our partners and stakeholders around the world to understand the causes of this problem.”
The ad is a big win for the brand and for sand, but it’s not the only safety issue that has come to the fore in recent years.
“It’s been a very hard issue to tackle,” said John T. Dolan, a former deputy commissioner for the US Environmental Protection Agency.
“I’ve had to fight for the public to understand what we do.”
A number of the brands on the list of top five in the latest Consumer Reports survey have been hit with lawsuits by homeowners who say they were injured by products that were supposed to be for use on the beach.
And while some companies are now selling sand for use in the home, that hasn’t always been the case.
“There’s been an effort to make sand a safe alternative to other materials and products,” said Dolan.
“But we still have some products that are a very safe alternative.”
The brand of sand that is the most popular is sand made by the French company Niveau, which makes sand for construction sites.
“Niveau has always been on the leading edge in sand for building sites,” said a spokesperson for the company.
“The Niveaus Sand is a high quality, durable, high performance sand.”
That’s good news for people who like to surf on sand, who need a great sand deck for a long-term vacation, or who just want to protect themselves from the dangers of the sand.
