NYJ.com’s Adam Schefter reports that the Jets will wear their first practice of the 2018 preseason on Saturday at MetLife Stadium.
They’ll wear the standard white uniforms, but with a “rockland safety” logo on their helmets.
This is the first time that the team has worn the new black uniforms in 2017.
The Jets have worn their black uniforms this season in four straight games, and the new color scheme is a departure from the team’s traditional blue-and-gold look.
In 2017, the team wore a black helmet, but that was done for the season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The New York Jets are expected to be without three starting defensive linemen and two starting safeties for the preseason opener, but they’ll have a mix of players on the field.
The players the team will be seeing are a mix between rookies and veterans.
New York has an experienced roster with the likes of Marcus Maye, Muhammad Wilkerson and Darryl Roberts.
The team has two new starters in tight end Marcedes Lewis and wide receiver Eric Decker.
Lewis is an undrafted rookie out of Georgia, and Decker is an unproven undrafted rookie who has been working with the team in training camp.
Decker and Lewis have had some chemistry, and Lewis has been the team leader on special teams.
The other newcomer to the team is cornerback Josh Wilson, who signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2018.
He’s been a big part of the special teams unit.
Wilson has been in a backup role the past two seasons, but has been getting reps at cornerback in recent years.
This season, Wilson is starting at corner, and he’s also the starting nickel cornerback for the Jets.
Safety Rashod Hill is another undrafted rookie that the organization has been looking to fill in.
Hill played his first career game against the Eagles in 2019.
He played the last three games of the season, and has been a regular starter the past four seasons.
Safety Devin McCourty is the only other player to start the preseason on the left side.
The starting left guard is Chris Ivory, who is playing for the Eagles.
Ivory had a nice preseason and looked good in his debut game against Carolina.
Ivory is expected to play this season.
Right tackle Anthony Steen is another rookie who is starting his first season on the practice squad.
Steen started at right tackle for the first two games of last season.
He struggled in that position, but then moved to left tackle for most of the preseason.
The second preseason game is on Saturday against the Miami Dolphins.
Right guard Andrew Kugbila has also been practicing with the club.
He is the starter at right guard for the third preseason game against Tampa Bay.
Left tackle Bryan Stork is also expected to start for the team, but he’s still learning the position.
Right defensive tackle Darryll Roberts is expected back in the lineup against the Bengals, but left defensive tackle K’Waun Williams is still out with a knee injury.
Safety James Ihedigbo is expected at practice Saturday against Cincinnati, and linebacker Josh Jones is also slated to practice.
Safety Brandon Dixon and cornerback Rashard Robinson are expected back this week.
Cornerback Marqise Lee is expected out of practice against the Buccaneers.
Safety Jalen Tabor, who played last season at left tackle, is still recovering from a shoulder injury.
