On Thursday, the city of Halifax said it was working with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to offer a new shoe that can be worn to the emergency room.
The shoe, which is made from a durable material called polyurethane, is made by Airavia.
The company says it can withstand extreme temperatures up to 40 C, and has been used in medical settings to treat people with heat-related conditions.
The city says the new shoe will be available in November for $120, and that the first 200 customers can have their shoes repaired by the company within two weeks.
“We have the expertise in the field to do the job,” said Coun.
Scott McKee.
“It’s been a long road, but we’ve been through it.”
It’s not the first time the city has partnered with Airavia to offer an alternative to the standard shoe.
The Airavia footwear was used by police officers in the wake of the 2013 shooting at the Air Canada Centre in Ottawa, where a gunman killed three people and injured eight others.
The RCMP issued a release at the time saying the shoes were the best choice available to keep people safe.
The shoes were also used by people at the Ottawa Citizen’s office during the 2015 riots, but the company later said it no longer had the capacity to provide them.
The Royal Canadian Navy also uses Airavia shoes, but they have to wear them with the Navy’s uniform and they’re not used in emergencies.
